Broadbent Stanley employ new apprentice

We have recently employed Jack Myers as a new apprentice machine tool fitter.

Young people are increasingly adopting an apprenticeship as a viable career path. Gaining skills as they grow in their individual roles, developing the practical work-based skills businesses need.

With a move to the new offices, we have expanded and this has allowed for additional staff to be employed. The aim is to see growth, maintain high standards and ultimately result in more machine orders.

Yet another Smiths Services Yorky installation

Halifax, UK based Broadbent Stanley have recently supplied and installed their ninth Yorky Type ‘O’ Oil Tool Grinder to a single customer, Smith’s Services, for their facility in Hassi Messaoud, Algeria.

Capable of grinding all types of ‘down hole’ oil tools, this particular application called for the full CNC Yorky model, and will primarily be utilised for the regrinding of stabilisers up to 42” (1066mm) in diameter x 144” (3.6M) long, fishing tools, cross-over shoes and reamers.

Houston based Smith’s were a world Top 500 World Company in their own right before being acquired by the giant Schlumberger Group (also Houston based) employing some 126,000 people globally.

Says Broadbent Stanley Managing Director, Graham Thomas, “We are, and have been a preferred supplier to both Smith’s and Schlumberger for a number of years, and work hard at maintaining that relationship. And although the well engineered Yorky enjoys excellent reliability, mishaps do occur, and we will supply service/support anywhere in the world at a moments notice – even if it does mean one of our Technicians flying out to Texas, Nigeria or Kazakstan.

The innovative, purpose designed and built Yorky Type ‘O’ is the world’s leading Oil Tool Grinder aimed by both OEM and repair shops and is available in both semi-automatic and full CNC operation, with the latter utilising the powerful, easy to use, Fanuc Oi controller. In addition to the above mentioned drilling tools, the Yorky is also capable of grinding drill pipe up to 12 metres (472”) in length along with hydroclean bars and other associated equipment.

Broadbent Stanley Relocates

It’s all change for Yorkshire based machine tool maker Broadbent Stanley as they have not only bought the Yorky Oilfield Grinder name outright (formerly a partnership agreement) but have moved to larger premises

Now one of the oldest established names in the UK, Broadbent Stanley have moved from their base for the past 11 years in Sowerby Bridge to larger premises in Halifax, West Yorkshire. This is due to the continued expansion of both their oil country lathe business and the unbridled success of the Yorky Oilfield Grinder. With in excess of 50 Yorky units sold since Managing Director, Graham Thomas seized uponand bought the rights to manufacture from the now defunct Yorkshire Machine Tools.

Unlike many of UK’s machine tool companies Broadbent Stanley has not only weathered numerous recessions but has seen the development of many new products and is looking forward to a bright future.

For reference Broadbent Stanley now exports almost 95% of its products.

Yorky for Lion Engineering Services

Based in Great Yarmouth, Lion Engineering Services has become one of the UK’s leading exponents in the repair and supply of ‘down hole’ drilling equipment, and over time has built an enviable reputation in the oil and gas industries. Formed in 1968 offering welding and machining facilities for the North Sea rigs, it soon made its presence felt by offering quality products at competitive prices with a quick turnaround in order to meet oil companies’ needs.

Fast forward 45 years and the company now boast a multi-million pound turnover, selling its services and products worldwide, with investments in new equipment over the past few years in excess of £1M per annum. Following a recent £400K investment including a new 5 axis CNC PTA welding plant and a Mititoyo CMM, the next project was for a purpose built grinding machine. Says Managing Director Martin Brown, ‘Currently we utilise manual grinding machines and whilst we posses the in-house skills, our aim is to maintain the lead over our competition by further improving quality and accuracy, automating processes where possible.’ He added ‘As components such as fishing tools, stabilisers, drill bits and so on become more sophisticated; we need to introduce a higher level of technology to machine them’.

Following extensive market research it soon became apparent that Halifax, West Yorkshire based Broadbent Stanley offered the ideal product in the form of the Yorky Oilfield Grinder. Yorky is purpose designed and built grinding machine available in semi-automatic or full CNC operation with varying bed lengths to suit customer requirements. A fourth axis is also offered on the CNC variant enabling melon profiles and double helix to be ground. Able to grind all types of oilfield tools including drill pipes up to 12 metres, the Yorky is rapidly becoming first choice for both repair shops and the OEM market.

After some discussion followed by successful cutting tests, Lion Engineering Services immediately placed an order for a Yorky 4 axis machine driven by the powerful but operator friendly Fanuc Oi controller. Delivery and installation went without a hitch with the machine in production within 3 days. Along with a better quality product and machining to higher tolerances, it is believed the Yorky will reduce lead times on their products by a substantial margin.

Broadbent Stanley is one of the worlds key players in the supply of machinery to the oil and gas markets with their range of high quality, heavy duty hollow spindle (oil country) lathes and gantry mills and after recognising a gap in the market for a large capacity, purpose built grinding machine, launched the range of Yorky Oilfield grinders some five years ago. From those humble beginnings orders for almost fifty machines have been won with installations world wide ranging from Aberdeen, the Americas, Europe, to the Gulf and Azerbaijan.
